Reviews:

"The 2014 Moonset exhibits plenty of tangy, peppery blackcurrant and blackberry fruit, and medium to full body without the weight or richness of the Zinfandel or the personality of the Sucker Punch. Nevertheless, there is a lot to like, as the wine is intense and satisfying. Drink it over the next 7-8 years. "- Wine Advocate

A brand new label from the head winemaker at Rosenblum, this is your chance to get on board with a new winery before anyone else.  This powerful and expressive red blend is composed of 80% Zinfandel from the Red Rock Ranch Vineyard in Knights Valley (2300ft elevation), 17% Petite Sirah from the Tzabaco Vineyard in Dry Creek Valley and 3% Alicante Bouschet from the Viszlay Vineyard in Russian River.  Big and bold is the best description, but there’s finesse here as well, with hints of dark chocolate, spiced blackberry and well integrated oak.  The wine is killer and easily drinks like a $40 bottle, grab a few to impress friends at your next gathering.  Enjoy now through 2022. - DZ Apr 2016

Why We're Drinking It:

90 points from the Wine Advocate, which writes: “The 2014 Moonset exhibits plenty of tangy, peppery blackcurrant and blackberry fruit, and medium to full body…” and concludes: “there is a lot to like, as the wine is intense and satisfying.”

This is the inaugural release of John Kane’s new project. Kane is the winemaker from Rosenblum, a winery that set the bar for exquisite single-vineyard Zins back when few in the business took the grape seriously. Rosenblum produced dozens of beautifully made, bountifully awarded single-vineyard Zins from old-vine source fruit. Thanks to his nearly two decades at Rosenblum, Kane developed close and enduring friendships with a few of California’s premier Zin growers. We all now benefit from these friendships, and this particular red is but one delicious example.

Saturated with succulent red fruit on the nose and palate, this jammy, juicy red is brimming with cherry cola and blueberry pie filling notes with tons of cinnamon and clove spice and a hint of purple flowers—ending in a textured, soft finish. As of now, JCK makes only three wines—all 90 points or above scorers, and all a testament to friendship, loyalty, and two of California’s native sons—John Kane and Zinfandel!

Reasons why we love it:

The lion’s share (80%) of fruit for this big, hearty red is old-vine Zinfandel from the Red Rock Ranch in Knights Valley (a spectacular site at 2,300 feet in elevation and known to produce some of the most sought-after Zin in the world). In addition there is 17% Petite Sirah from Tzabaco Vineyard in Dry Creek, a site known to produce savory, spicy Petite Sirah with outstanding clarity. And the final 3% consists of amazing Alicante Bouschet from Vislay Vineyard, a cool and fog-enshrouded site in the Russian River AVA.

Founded in 2014, the JCK label may be brand new, but proprietor John Kane is anything by a novice. Working with Kent Rosenblum and Jeff Cohn over the course of 15 years at Rosenblum Cellars, Kane developed a love of Zin and Rhone Blends and helped make Rosenblum one of the planet’s best Zin-focused labels.

The 2012 vintage in Sonoma was “excellent across the board,” according to the Wine Spectator. The Wine Enthusiast rated this vintage 92 points for Zin in Sonoma County, and the Wine Advocate echoed this with another 92-point score.

Tasting Notes:

Bursting with aromas of wild cherry, vanilla, blueberry and boysenberry. Lively on the palate with ripe dark fruit, cola, exotic spices and violets with a juicy, plush finish.
