Reviews:

Inky aromas with hints of graphite and anise. Black raspberry, dark chocolate, cinnamon and red cherry show on a full palate, layered with oak tannin and well-balanced acidity. All in all a great value that will age through 2021. 94 Points - JZ Oct '18

Why We're Drinking It:

It sometimes happens that the most exciting vinous discoveries occur not in a distant country or exotic climate, but just next door. When we first tasted this new Bordeaux style red made from 100% estate-grown fruit, we were shocked to find its source was smack in the middle of Dry Creek Valley. This little-known estate sold its fruit to Clos du Bois, Dry Creek Vineyard and Rodney Strong—among others. Until recently, Arbor Bench was as new to us and to most of our Members.

The wine is made from equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec from Arbor Bench’s enviable 33 acres divided between the sandy loam of the valley floor (perfect for Merlot) and the gravel-rich soil on the hillsides (tailor made for Cab and Malbec. Winning 95 points, a Double Gold and Best of Class at the 2018 International Women’s Wine Competition, this small-production Cal Claret also took home medals from the Sonoma County Harvest Fair (silver) and the Sunset International Wine Competition (gold).

·    A boutique, family owned winery, Arbor Bench is still home to the Hart-Lidow family and has been since 1984.

·    In deference to the natural wonders of the property, owners have planted only 33 of their nearly 100 acres to vines, leaving the rest to native woodland.

·    Arbor Bench’s Cabernet and Malbec vines are planted on red benchland soil above the valley floor. With its high percentage of gravelly loam and excellent sun exposure, this is one of Sonoma’s best spots for concentrated Bordeaux varietals.

·    2013 was a 93-point Wine Enthusiast vintage. And “a long and moderate growing season offered both good quality and quantity,” writes the Wine Spectator regarding 2013 in Sonoma’s Dry Creek Valley.

Tasting Notes:

From the winery:

Classically styled, our 2013 Meritage is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec in equal proportions. Each variety gives nuance and influence from the deep crimson color and black cherry fruit of the Cabernet plus soft tannins and savory thyme and cinnamon notes of Merlot along with the juicy, spicy peppercorn notes of Malbec.

The Story to Know:

From the winery:

Ideally situated a few miles north of Healdsburg, in Sonoma County’s famed Dry Creek Valley, family-owned Arbor Bench Vineyards has provided Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes to California’s premier wineries since 1984.

Now you can experience our estate-grown Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Meritage wines which, under the careful hand of Winemaker Chris Markell, are outstanding expressions of our grapes’ character and complexity. All of our wines are medal winners!

Perfect Pairings:

From the winery:

An elegant wine that begs for a standing rib roast or roasted vegetable tagine.
