You Had Their Awesome Merlot, Now Dive In to Their Awesome Pinot

I was first exposed to the wines of Frostwatch during my 2 years managing a little wine bar in San Clemente, CA (a worthwhile trip if you're headed to SoCal). We were featuring them for our monthly Winemaker Dinner, and brought them back the next year for their popularity amongst our customers. The purveyor and winemaker, Brent, was a steller, stand-up guy. I got the same exact impression when I reconnected with him at this year's SF Chronicle Wine Competition tasting. Brent is an absolute geek about the state of his vines, and it shows in both the way he talks about them and how delicious they are.

Aromas of ripe strawberry and earl grey on the nose. Light-medium body on the palate, with flavors of cranberry juice, forest floor and fresh morning dew. It finishes mid-length, lingering just long enough. A winery that I love to feature, and that you'll love to drink. 92 Points - JZ June '18

Why We're Drinking It:

It comes down to source fruit for this small-production, single-vineyard gem. Down to the Swan Clone, which is known for low yields and intensity, and down to the challenging terroir on which these Swan Clone vines are planted. Shielded from the sun for much of the day by the Bennet Mountain, the Frostwatch vineyard is perhaps Bennet Valley’s premier zone for Pinot Noir—a grape that requires a cool climate and severe diurnal changes in temperature to really show its stuff. Drink this French oak-aged beauty now with poultry, lamb or salmon.

A profound Pinot Noir, the 2013 Frostwatch earned a Gold Medal at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition and this 90-point review from the Wine Enthusiast: “This densely layered wine has an underlying bright acidity and firm structure. Quiet, nuanced cranberry flavors ride a wave of earthy forest and black tea scents.”

· Sonoma's Bennet Valley AVA boasts a unique climate thanks to the three mountains that surround it. The Sonoma, Taylor and Bennet mountains trap the summer’s heat as well as the evening fog, thereby providing a drastic (and beneficial) range of temperature changes from daytime to nighttime.

· Frostwatch debuted in 2002, though the owners of this label began their obsession with wine in the mid 1980s while attending U.C. Davis.

· Frostwatch’s estate vineyard sits in the shadow of Bennett Peak and is notably cooler than elsewhere in the appellation.

·    This Pinot comes from the Swan Clone and from budwood brought in from the Dehlinger Vineyard—one of the Russian River’s top sites for Pinot Noir.

Tasting Notes:

This crisp and well-balanced wine has a raspberry jam flavor on the tongue. You'll also notice flavors of various spices and hints of pepper.
