Double Gold Medal, 2017 Sonoma County Harvest Fair

Reviews:

Full bodied and fleshy, this 100% varietal wine offers polished tannin and toasty oak, the flavors lean and classically defined in pencil, cedar and soy. Notes of black pepper and tobacco etch themselves onto a lengthy finish. -Wine Enthusiast

Why We're Drinking It:

This little-known winery has produced their own estate-grown wines for just over a decade, but since the 1980s Arbor Bench’s vines have been a highly sought after source snatched by the likes of Clos du Bois, Dry Creek Vineyard and Rodney Strong—among others.

Winning big at the 2017 Sonoma County Harvest Fair, this 300-case production Cab earned a Double Gold Medal and big-time praise from judges. Add a 90-point score from the Wine Enthusiast, and Arbor Bench may be staring down a barrel of unasked-for fame. At least for the time being, this overachieving, cassis and cocoa-scented, 100% Cabernet remains a sensational deal.

·    Wine Enthusiast rates the 2014 vintage with 94 points for Sonoma Cabernet while the Wall Street Journal writes: “Someday, when California’s persistent drought is finally over, wine lovers may lift a glass to its memory, toasting the extraordinary 2014 vintage it made possible.”

·    Family owned, Arbor Bench is still home to the Hart-Lidow family and has been since 1984.

·    In deference to the natural wonders of the property, owners have planted only 33 of their nearly 100 acres to vines, leaving the rest to native woodland.

·    Arbor Bench’s Cabernet vines are planted on red benchland soil above the valley floor. With its high percentage of gravelly loam and excellent sun exposure, this is one of Sonoma’s best spots for concentrated Cab

Tasting Notes:

From the winery:

Full-bodied and packed with dense, dark fruit intensity, our Estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon offers notes of black cherry, cassis, sweet vanilla, cocoa, and a hint of sandalwood spice. It will age beautifully in the cellar—if you can resist the temptation to drink it now!

The Story to Know:

From the winery:

Ideally situated a few miles north of Healdsburg, in Sonoma County’s famed Dry Creek Valley, family-owned Arbor Bench Vineyards has provided Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes to California’s premier wineries since 1984.

Now you can experience our estate-grown Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Meritage wines which, under the careful hand of Winemaker Chris Markell, are outstanding expressions of our grapes’ character and complexity. All of our wines are medal winners!

Perfect Pairings:

Pair this with anything from chicken wings smothered in garlic to a savory, grilled rack of lamb.
