Reviews:

"Light in color and texture, this wine at first is muted and shy, getting spicier and earthier as it goes, with a baked strawberry-compote flavor at its core." -  Wine Enthusiast

"Calstar makes small lots of hand crafted wines.  Rick Davis is a very quiet, unassuming wine maker.  His elegant, balanced, spicy Pinot Noir is a blend from 5 vineyards in the Sonoma Coast appellation.  Nice oak treatment of 30% new French oak, slight earth tones, and medium-bodied structure"-Sonoma Wine

The 2013 Pinot Noir from Calstar is classic Sonoma Coast in style, with bright red fruit, baking spice and dark earth blending for a layered and elegant experience.  The wine is a leautiful pale ruby in the glass and presents with a zippy acidity that lasts through the juicy palate.  Enjoy now through 2020. - DZ Aug 2017

Why We're Drinking It:

This Pinot Noir vintage is marked by charm and transparency. A real Sonoma Coast hit by famed cool-climate winemaker Rick Davis and the prestigious mountaintop vineyards from which it was sourced. A dedicated Pinot fanatic, Rick’s Calstar label has stayed somewhat under-the-radar, but his obsession with lively, balanced, food-friendly Burgundian-style wines is so very obvious.
All of Calstar’s small-lot Pinots exhibit a decidedly Old-World grace that we are becoming quite obsessed with ourselves.

Reasons why we love it

  • Flowers’ pedigreed winemaker. Winemaker Rick Davis is well known for his time spent at Flowers Winery with Winemaker Greg LaFollette and as Consulting Winemaker for the likes of Londer, Halleck, La Czar and Alcina. His specialty? Cool climate varietals such as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
  • Seriously small production. Rick’s Calstar label is in seriously high demand. All wines are produced in limited amounts and are very hard to find outside the winery. Not to mention they’re delicious and have received a high number of 90+ ratings and Gold Medals.
  • A golden vintage. Did somebody say 2013? Wine Spectator reported winemakers saying “that this year’s growing season was golden for most parts of the Golden State” and Decanter stated that “the vintage amplified everything...striking complexity and sophistication in the glass.” 2013 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir received 95 points from Wine Enthusiast and we all were pleasantly surprised by the large yields. So much so that there almost wasn’t enough winery space for all the premium fruit.
  • A blend of 5. This 100% Pinot Noir is sourced from 5 carefully selected Sonoma Coast vineyards. Rick’s goal was elegance and balance, and we say he nailed it. Earth and spice and everything nice sits alongside bright aromatics and a seductive medium-body.
  • Cats not Cali. Calstar Cellars is not named for the state of California or any of its universities but for two special cats (Callie and Star) who share a home with Rick and his wife Lynn.

Tasting Notes:

Medium ruby violet in color, the 2014 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir is delightfully fruit forward from the start.  Raspberry, dried cranberry, red plum and Bing cherry dominate the nose with hints of sassafrass, warm spice and cedarwood starting to develop once the wine opens up in the glass.  A stellar vintage, 2014 brings supple, ripe tannins and great purity of fruit with that is anchored by signature Sonoma Coast earth: wet river rock, forest floor and loam. Juicy cranberry acidity carries the wine through the palette, finishing with fresh strawberry, sweet oak and a pebble-like minerality.

The Story to Know:

A life-long interest in fine food and artisan craft led, Proprietor and Winemaker, Rick Davis to the wine industry.  With graduate work in soil sciences and his first experience as a cellar-hand for Rivendell Winery, a small winery in New Paltz, NY, he quickly learned the trade and excelled to Winemaker.  In order to pursue this newfound passion, his move to Sonoma County, CA left him in the perfect place to master winemaking and focus on Pinot Noir.

Rick has spent 20 years improving his process through experiences with Flowers Winery under Winemaker, Greg LaFollette, and as Consulting Winemaker with Londer Vineyards (2005-2011), Halleck Vineyards, La Czar Vineyards, and Alcina Cellars and developed Calstar Cellars, his own label, as an extension of these relationships.

He specializes in cool climate varietals like Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, and has worked with many of the top producers on the Sonoma Coast.  Rick’s passion is to produce high quality, food-friendly wines that can be shared at every table knowing the bounty of the vine.
